Dull knives?

Let us bring sharpness to you

Mobile knife sharpening serving Atlanta and the surrounding areas. We come to you, or catch us at a farmers market.

About this video

We had dinner at my dad’s house, and before we left he handed me a few knives that needed sharpening.

By the time we got home, the power was out, so I figured it was as good a time as any to get them sharpened. One of the nice things about running a mobile knife sharpening business is that I have everything I need to keep working, even when the lights are out.

In this video, I’m sharpening Dad’s knives and experimenting with a 1x30 belt grinder. It’s not a machine I normally use, but I thought it would be fun to spend some time with it and see how it performs.

Nothing too fancy—just some knife sharpening, a little experimentation, and a productive way to pass the time during a power outage. Dad’s knives are sharp again, and I learned a few things along the way.

Thanks for watching!

Hey everyone, Nate here with SimplySharp and we are out of power, but because I am a sharpener and sharpeners can do anything, uh, I’ve got my battery backup unit. Um, got this all plugged into my power strip at home that has got my sharpeners, my lights, um, air purifi or air filter, and uh, we’re gonna give this a whirl. Um, I’m also testing a new microphone system. So, kind of interesting to see what this sounds like. But, um, I was at dinner at dad’s tonight and we are going to go ahead and sharpen his knives that, um, he needs all set up. Uh, normally I am using the Work Sharps, but I thought tonight it would be fun to, um, go ahead and use the buck tool with Cliff Curry’s angle guide here. Um, so we’re going to give all this a whirl. And as we go through this, um, I’m going to note that my battery pack, it’s pretty big one, is at 76%. And so we’re going to see what this takes out of that battery pack. So let’s get started. Um also we’re going to have a yummy delicious uh Tropicalia. Uh for those of you not in Georgia, this is a pretty good Georgia beer. And um it is from a horrible city, Athens, full of horrible bulldogs. But it’s a good beer. All right. So, let’s see what dad gave me. Little Santoken serrated knife. We’ll put that over here for now. Dad has a bunch of interesting knives. He’s got a bunch of globals. Got a bunch of dollongs. Um, this is a um I think a Milk Street I think is that guy. And I mean, I’ve got a number of knives here. This is probably not even 20% of all the knives that he has. Does a lot of cooking. He makes awesome food for us. Um, but he has a lot of knives. Another global here. All right. So, number of global sanus um repairing knife. Don’t even know what you call that knife. Uh see another small sanu. All right. So, even this and the um the doll strongs. I’m going to do all of these. I’ve got this set up for about 15 degrees because I knew he had all of his globals. So, I’m going to just go ahead and do everything at that. And we’re just going to give it a whirl. Fire it in there and see what happens. I am going to use my same grit progression which is starting with the Cubatron P120 and then I’ll work my way up to the uh A30 and then we’ll finish with the strap. Not quite. There we go. You are wow. All right, there we go. So, two, four, six, eight, 10 knives all apexed. Um, not a lot of damage on these knives. Dad uses the crap out of them. Usually, I got a lot of chips and stuff to grind out, but not a lot of that today. Now we’re going to move to the A30. All right. So, there we go. We’ve refined these. And just to kind of check, battery is at 73% now. Um, hopefully power will be coming back. So, anybody new to this stuff, the reason I have just turned this around is the wheel direction. Um, you don’t want these things coming at you at all. It’s bad news. Um, away. We’re just going to get that going away from us. This is a deber. This is a debur step here. Scotchbrite wheel. All right. So, we are done. We are ready to start with the stropping. Um, so normally what you want to do with the 1x30s is you can put a belt on there, but again, you can’t do like an edge leading. So, you need to set it up something like this. This is the way the belt, this is the belt motion is this way. Um, then, you know, having the angle guide doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in that case. Uh, so usually I’ll take the angle guide off and do whatever or just have a whole another uh 1x30 which me it’s kind of a thing. I already have everything set up with the Work Sharp so I’ll just go ahead and use that. 72% on the battery pack. I’m using the felt belt. Um, man, I keep going back and forth between felt and leather. Um, the felt is certainly faster. I do find uh you know that it kind of starts to get a little fuzzy and then it leaves like some interesting kind of mess with the compound on the knives that you kind of got to clean off and it’s just a whole thing. So a lot of times I’ll go back to leather especially at uh lower angles like 15°. But um here see what happens here. If that is a concern I’ll just bounce back into the leather or we’re going to give this a whirl. I like the blue compound for this. The test is on a microfiber cloth. You want to see if it’s catching. And so in this case, it is still catching. So, I got some more work to do. Let’s see how that goes. Much better. Heat. All right. So, we are done. These first two knives still had a little bit of uh bite on them running through the microfiber. And what that tells me is I probably should have spent a little bit more time on the refinement steps. So, with that A30 belt, maybe like another pass or two. Um, but let me give myself a little bit of grace because I don’t normally use the 1x30. Um, I use that one every now and then. I use my um my Vaver like the Tulker a lot or Tuler, however the heck that’s pronounced, uh a lot more. Uh but I also use this guy a lot. So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to see if I can get it nice and not bitey with um a little bit more of the felt. And if not, I’m going to go back and um hit it on the 1x30 a little bit longer. A lot better. Hey, great success. We got power. All right. And um it is hot in a [clears throat] mask. I understand the science, but man, it is hot to wear a mask. Um there we go. See how we did. Battery’s at 70% by the way. All right, there we go. Um 25 minutes. Dad’s got some nice sharp new knives. I have my power back, so that’s pretty cool. Um there we go. 1x30. Uh shout out to Cliff as always. Um you know, actually, let’s do some mega shout outs. So, when I first started this almost four years ago, July the 5th is going to be our fifth year anniversary. Um, Richard, also known as Spike over at Sweet Hone Atlanta, kind of helped me along my journey. He started this a little bit before I did here in the Atlanta market. Super cool guy. Um, he gave me a nice little nudge, good practical advice. Um, love working with him. Love feeding him business. Awesome guy. And then obviously Cliff, um, doesn’t do a lot of videos on this guy, um, which I still just love. It’s if you can see my garage, I have every sharpener. Um, still come back to this guy. But, uh, yeah. Um, showing me how to do anything I know how to do on the 1x30, which I admit is probably not great. Most of you are probably better than me. But hopefully that was helpful, educational, maybe a little interesting. And the most important thing is dad has sharp knives. Thanks everyone. Have a great night.
