Sharpening Dad’s knives on the Bucktool.
Hello everyone. Nate here with SimplySharp. And today I’ve got uh some of Dad’s knives. Not even all of them. Uh but we’re going to try out the new uh my not really all that new, but I’ve never made a video on it. Um this is the Buck Tool Low Speed uh 1x30. Um Cliff and some others have done a good review on this and seem to really enjoy it. I’ve been playing around with it. Um, I like it, but uh I’m not really sure that I love it, but then I’ve also not really um done too too many knives on it. So, I’m going to go ahead and do dad’s knives on here today and then u see how I kind of feel about it at the end. Uh I’m also going to um try a different dust collecting thing cuz you know, one of the advantages that I think Cliff and others like is that it’s a little bit easier to get the dust out of it. So, I’m going to give that a whirl and we’re just going to kind of see what happens here. It’s probably going to be horribly loud. Um, I might have to do something about the audio, but uh, we’ll see how this goes. So, one of the things that is really nice about it is uh dad really uses the mess out of his knives. Um, and they are quite dull. Um, you know, just a couple passes with this 120 grit belt and I’ve got a great um uh edge on there. Now, it is going to be interesting to see um you know, am I putting the right angle on here? There’s really only going to be Well, I guess there’s multiple ways to find out, but it felt right. It looks right. Um I had actually set this up to be at 15°. Um now, I know you’re kind of watching me and I’m probably not hitting exactly right. Um to be honest, I’ve kind of moving a little bit away from exact angles these days. I think I kind of can just feel it for the most part. Um, but we’ll see. I am having a hard time getting my hands used to the feedback from the belt. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat. Heat up here. Heat. Heat. Not a 100% sure exactly what I should be doing this guy. I’m sure I could go look at some videos. Um I feel like if I kind of come in might just freehand this one a little bit more. I know. Um, you know, with the with the Work Sharp I’m able to just kind of really kind of work the edge of the belt here and get in there, but never tried it with this guy. I’m a little concerned with the edge leading in this part right here. So, I actually might I might actually just kind of try to freehand it. Edge trailing. I um I don’t know. We’ll find out. Um I just feel like this could be a dicey situation, but I’ll I’ll try it lightly and see what happens. Heat. Heat. Okay. Uh, that wasn’t terrible. Um, looks pretty decent. Uh, now it did raise a burr very, very quickly. Um, none of the knives even got remotely like barely even warm. Um, so yeah, that was pretty cool. I think for blasting through a bunch of knives, that is a lot faster. And, uh, this is actually doing a pretty good job. Like there’s a little bit of dust I’ve got collected right there. Otherwise, this seems to be doing an excellent job taking care of the dust. All right, so we are on to the Tricac A30. So, this is the exact same progression I use uh normally with the Work Sharp. Um, this guy in there. All right. Heat. Yeah, I’m definitely going to have to practice. It’s going to be interesting to watch myself on video as well. Game tape. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat. Heat up here. Heat. So again, quite a bit faster. Uh barely any dust. That was it. Um so far so good. All right. So, I don’t have a hole set up to flip this bad boy around and put it on its edge to do the edge trailing. So, we’re going to get a little froggy here. And we’re just going to um Interesting. This this got warm. Um uh we’re just going to try to do our best at trailing Heat Not Yeah. Heat. getting Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat up here. Okay, I know this knife really well cuz I have the same knife. Um, let’s just try this. Pretty good. Um, pretty good. Uh, I will say that this seems to take uh, and I’m pretty sure this is me needing to practice, but um, this is quite a bit slower than, uh, the same belt, the same felt belt on the Work Sharp. Um, a lot more passes. I’m probably just a little shy about it. I might also not be getting quite the right angle. um when I’m drawing it across it’s better, but it’s still kind of a little little toothy and I can feel that when I’m cutting in there. But this would actually cut food perfectly fine. Um so I’m just going to keep practicing. The only thing I know to do might be why people smarter than me use uh wheels for the bever. Trying to keep myself from not having to carry around a lot of equipment since we try to keep a really small footprint for mobile service. Heat up here. Heat. When I first uh started with the felt belt um months ago when uh Cliff kind of first came out with them, for the uh the Work Sharp. I feel like these are where those knives felt like. Um you know, following the same stropping that I would normally do with a leather belt. Um they did seem to drag not as smooth. Um I don’t think there’s any burr left in there. I just think that there was maybe uh I don’t know, whatever. But uh eventually I got over that. So I’m assuming I’m going to get over the same thing here. Uh it does seem to be getting to that acceptable place uh more quickly. So let’s see. So still plenty sharp. Uh just you can just feel you can just feel that it’s not quite super smooth. Um but pretty sure dad’s going to be happy with them. Better Heat up here. getting better. Uh maybe a little less pressure. Let’s see. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat up here. Well, that was great. Heat up here. Heat. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat up here. Heat. Heat. Heat up here. Heat. That might have been the best one yet. Heat up here. I mean, it’s not the smoothest feeling. Um, like I said, I feel like it’s probably chocked to practice. I’m also sure that if I followed um some of the deburring steps they do with um some wheels, that would probably uh help out a lot. But uh impressed how much faster I was able to raise a burr and refine these. Definitely a lot faster. I feel like I need a lot of practice to do this. Uh I don’t think it’s going to replace the uh Work Sharps in the mobile business. Um but I’m going to keep practicing and we’ll see what happens. Thanks everyone.
