The belt progression here normally stops at an A30. This time Nate takes it up to a Trizac A3 to find out whether the finer belt actually changes the finished edge, or just the time it takes.
Hello everyone. I’m going to try something a little different today. Um, normally I stop with an A130 or I’m sorry, an A30, but I’m going to take it up to an A3 today. Uh, a while back I just bought every type of belt I could find and I’ve never even played with the A um the A3. So, we’re going to see what happens. Uh, this Sanku over here when I tested it, it test came in around the mid4s on the best test and we’re going to give it a whirl. All right. So, anyone new to this, uh, this first belt is going to put an edge, uh, back on the knife. It’s going to do the bulk of the work here. Normally, I use a Cubatron P120. This is a P180 cuz I just happen to grab it. Never. Okay. So, little not a great bur right there. So, we’re going to give it one more pass. And if you are new to sharpening or you uh have questions about what I was doing there, I am using my thumb prints to feel for the presence of a burr. A burr is a sign that you have, for lack of a better term, done all the sharpening or done all the edge formation that that you need to do. Uh people can talk about the specifics of that better than me, but that’s what I’m feeling for. So now I’m actually I’m not going to go straight to the A3. I am going to do my typical A30 step. Um my progression is P120, lowest speed, A30. Usually bump it up to three here. And again, for anyone new, this is uh really kind of a refinement step. That first belt put some pretty um pronounced scratch patterns into the edge of the knife. So, this is going to refine that. It’s also going to work the burr back and forth and help us uh remove that burr. We don’t want to leave it there in our final product. And that right there probably typically would have been the end of uh this step, but I’m just going to go one more. Why not? All right. All right. Here we go. Brand new, never before used, tried, tested, or anything. A3 Certainly doesn’t look like it. Uh, looks like it would be a pretty toothy belt. Well, about to find out. Definitely sounds and feels different. Okay. And last up be felt some blue compound. And this I usually go uh level five speed on the workshop. Then I do a visual inspection, but I also like to use some felt to test. So just making sure that’s not catching anywhere. I think I think we’re pretty good. There’s one little spot in there. Um, let’s go ahead and get it. Yeah, there we go. All right. So, let’s see. It’s brisket day in our house and I’m definitely going to find out how this really works um a little bit later today with a different knife over here. All right. 116. So, not terrible. Um, actually pretty good for me. Anyways, I’m usually somewhere when I’m lucky I’m a little below 100, but I’m usually kind of in the, you know, 110s to 130s or so. So, um, I actually will probably not bother with that extra step. Um, I don’t really know it’s actually going to do any good, but I thought it’d be kind of fun. Um, maybe I’ll do a follow-up to see how it did with the brisket. Thanks, everyone.
